William Howe and his troops began the battle for New York City. On July 3, 1776 the British landed on Staten Island. In August, they fought against General George Washington in the Battle of Long Island. The British won the battle, but they didn't go to chase the Americans. Instead the British let the Americans escape with their troops. General Howe won the battle against General George Washington. General William Howe took his troops back to Fort Washington. They captured the Fort. And also 3000 prisoners and supplies. This was a bad loss for America. Then General Howe and his troops captured Fort Lee, New Jersey, across the river from New York City. The British had captured all of New York.
William Howe was against George Washington, and one of the British Generals in the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and also fought in The Battle of New York. He liked staying in New York, did not really fight in the first part of the war in 1777 but when he did fight he beat out George Washington. It was early summer when they fought in Battle of New York. It was during a six week period. He was convinced to attack Long Island, and or Manhattan. On August 22, Howe, began transporting from Staten Island to New York. On August 26 his troops seized American Guards. On September 13 he began moving his army across East River and Kips Bay, and hoping Washington would get cut off.
William Howe was one of the British generals during the Revolutionary War he was fighting for the British. Howe's uncle was the current king of England at the time of the Revolution. Howe was understanding of the colonist situation but he knew he had to flight against them. On April 14, 1778 Howe got a letter saying that he was able to retire. Later he sailed back to England and retired. He sailed back to England and retired. On July 12, 1818 Howe died in Plymouth, England.
